As a Redwoods elopement photographer, I’m here to help you plan your dream wedding in this breathtaking national park. Here’s everything you need to know before tying the knot beneath the iconic redwood trees.
Redwoods National and State Parks Locations
Redwoods National Park is located in Northern California, stretching along the Pacific coast. You can view the latest map of the park here. The park is a combination of several state and national parks. Each has its own unique offerings. Here’s a breakdown of the parks and the towns they are located in:
Redwood National Park (near Orick) – This is the core national park. It’s home to some of the tallest trees in the world. The park includes stunning areas like Lady Bird Johnson Grove, Tall Trees Grove, and Fern Canyon.
Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park (near Crescent City) – Known for its dense, lush forests and proximity to the Smith River. Jedediah Smith is quieter and more secluded. It’s perfect for couples seeking privacy.
Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park (near Crescent City) – This park offers coastal views and a unique mix of redwoods and beach. It’s great for couples who want the best of both worlds. It’s located just a short drive from Jedediah Smith.
Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park (near Orick) – Known for its accessible trails, Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway, and Redwood Creek Overlook. It offers amazing photography opportunities with open meadows and towering trees.
Humboldt Redwoods State Park (near Garberville) – Located south of the main national park, this state park is home to the iconic Avenue of the Giants. It’s about an hour’s drive from Garberville. The grand, towering trees make it an unforgettable ceremony backdrop.
Designated Ceremony Areas & Permits for your Redwood Forest Wedding
There are no traditional wedding venues in Redwood National Park. However, there are several popular areas for elopements and small ceremonies. You’ll need to apply for a permit for any ceremony within the national or state parks. To hold a wedding ceremony in Redwoods National Park or any of the state parks, you’ll need a special use permit.
Permits:
Redwoods National Park (contact the National Park Service) to inquire about permits. You’ll likely need to submit a detailed plan for your ceremony, including the date, location, number of guests, and vendors (e.g., photographer, officiant).
California State Parks (contact the individual park). Each state park may have slightly different regulations for weddings.
Permit Costs:
For Redwoods National Park, permits range from $100 – $500. The cost depends on the location and complexity of your event.
For California State Parks, permits are typically $50 – $200 for small gatherings. Larger events may have higher fees. You can contact the specific park for exact costs.
Guest Limits: Most parks in the Redwoods have guest limits to protect the park and ensure minimal impact on the environment.
Redwood National Park (Lady Bird Johnson Grove, Tall Trees Grove) – Guest limits generally range from 20 to 30 for these popular spots. Some locations may allow more guests for smaller, intimate ceremonies.
Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park (Jedediah Smith Grove) – Typically allows up to 25 guests at designated ceremony spots.
Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park (Redwood Creek Overlook, Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway) – These locations can accommodate up to 50 guests. Larger groups may need a special use permit.
If your guest count exceeds the standard limit, you may need to request a larger permit. You may also need to hire additional staff, such as a park ranger, to ensure everything runs smoothly.
